1. Lock it up
As Yahoo! News' Becky Worley notes, the first step in smartphone security—activating your handset's password lock—couldn't be easier.
For iPhone: Tap the Settings icon, the select General, Password Lock, and follow the instructions.
For Android: Go the Applications launcher, tap Settings, select Location & Security, and tap "Set up screen lock."
For BlackBerry: Go to the Options menu and select Security, Password, Set Password.
For other smartphone platforms, like WebOS or Windows Phone: Go to the settings menu and look for security options; you'll probably find the password lock settings there.
(Note: the specific menu selections may vary depending on which version of your phone's operating system is running on your device.)
Once you've chosen a password (the longer the better—and please, don't use your birthday, "1234," or "password"), you'll need to decide how long your phone will stay unlocked after you've entered your password. Longer than an hour may defeat the purpose of password-protecting your phone, while an immediate screen lock could prove annoying for heavy smartphone users. Becky's recommendation: five minutes, give or take.
2. Beef up your security
Want a password that's a little tougher to crack than a four-number PIN? Here are a few options for upping the security on your phone's screen lock.
For iPhone: The default iPhone password lock is a four-digit numeric PIN, but you can opt to select an alphanumeric password that's as long as your memory will bear. Tap General, Settings, Passcode Lock, and then flip the Simple Passcode switch to "Off." You can also set your iPhone to wipe itself after more than 10 failed password attempts; just switch "Erase Data" to "On."
For Android: As with the iPhone, Android phones will let you chose passwords longer than four digits, with 16 being the upper limit. You can also skip the traditional password and instead trace a pattern with your finger, connecting a grid of nine dots in sequence. Meanwhile, some newer Android phones (like the Motorola Atrix 4G) boast biometric security features like fingerprint scanners, good for unlocking your phone with a swipe of your fingertip. To access the various settings, tap Settings (natch) from the Applications launcher, then select Location & Security, Set up (or Change) screen lock.
For BlackBerry: As with the iPhone, you can set your BlackBerry to wipe itself after too many failed password attempts. Go to the Options menu, then select Security, Password, customize the Number of Password Attempts field, and select Save.
3. Locate — or wipe — your lost phone
Just about every smartphone on the market comes supports GPS—and that means almost any lost or stolen smartphone can be traced via GPS, provided the handset is on and in wireless range.
For iPhone users, just install Apple's free Find My iPhone app from the App Store; it will trace lost iPhones via the MobileMe website, lock their screens, sound an alert and put a message on the display (like "I'm lost! Call 123-555-1234")—or, in a worst-case scenario, remotely erase all your sensitive data. (Click here for a real-life Find My iPhone story that happened to yours truly.)
Meanwhile, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone users can try a handy app called Lookout, which boasts most of the same features as Find My iPhone and also comes with wireless backup and data management features.
4. Keep your browser from storing website passwords
One of the handiest features on the Android and iPhone mobile Web browsers is their ability to remember the usernames and passwords of oft-visited websites. The only problem, of course, is that this very same feature will make it a snap for anyone who picks up your lost iPhone to log into your Facebook profile—or, even worse, start poking around your online bank accounts.
Of course, your phone will usually ask your permission before remembering a given username and password, so you could just hit the "decline" button when it comes to online banking and other sensitive accounts. But if you'd rather be safe than sorry, you can disable your browser's auto-fill feature altogether.
For the iPhone: Tap Settings, Safari, Auto-fill, then turn the "Names & Passwords" switch off.
For Android: Open the browser, tap the Menu key, then tap settings; under the Security Settings heading, clear the "Remember passwords" checkbox.
Even if your smartphone's browser doesn't have an auto-fill feature for usernames and passwords, you should still consider clearing the "remember me" checkbox on website login pages, particularly when it comes to online banking or e-mail.
5. Secure all your other passwords
So, you stopped your browser from remembering your website passwords—but what about all those random usernames and passwords that you typed into your phone's memo application or contact book for safe keeping? Do yourself a favor and lock those passwords down, pronto.
If you're using a newer BlackBerry handset, you're in luck. Your phone should have a native, built-in password organizer, called Password Keeper, that will store any and all username and password combos, protecting them with—you guessed it—a master password. Just go to the applications menu, find the Password Keeper, select the icon, and follow the instructions.

Japan begins to dig for dead amid nuclear crisis
Millions of people spent a third night without water, food or heating in near-freezing temperatures along the devastated northeastern coast. Meanwhile, a third reactor at a nuclear power plant lost its cooling capacity, raising fears of a meltdown, while the stock market plunged over the likelihood of huge losses by Japanese industries including big names such as Toyota and Honda.

Friday's double-headed tragedy has caused unimaginable deprivation for people of this industrialized country that has not seen such hardships since World War II. In many areas there is no running water, no power and four- to five-hour waits for gasoline. People are suppressing hunger with instant noodles or rice balls while dealing with the loss of loved ones and homes.
"People are surviving on little food and water. Things are simply not coming," said Hajime Sato, a government official in Iwate prefecture, one of the three hardest hit.
He said authorities were receiving just 10 percent of the food and other supplies they need. Even body bags and coffins are running so short the government may turn to foreign funeral homes for help, he said.
"We have requested funeral homes across the nation to send us many body bags and coffins. But we simply don't have enough," he told The Associated Press. "We just did not expect such a thing to happen. It's just overwhelming."

Walls fall, smoke pours from Japan nuclear plant
SENDAI, Japan – An explosion at a nuclear power station tore down the walls of one building Saturday as smoke poured out and Japanese officials said they feared the reactor could melt down following the failure of its cooling system in a powerful earthquake and tsunami.
It was not clear if the damaged building housed the reactor. Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers were injured but details were not immediately available.
Footage on Japanese TV showed that the walls of one building had crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame standing. Puffs of smoke were spewing out of the plant.
"We are now trying to analyze what is behind the explosion," said government spokesman Yukio Edano, stressing that people should quickly evacuate a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius. "We ask everyone to take action to secure safety."
The trouble began at the plant's Unit 1 after Friday's massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it spawned knocked out power there. The disaster has killed hundreds of people and devastated the country's northeastern coast, where rescuers began slowly arriving Saturday.
The toll of destruction was still not known more than 24 hours after the quake since washed-out roads and shut airports have hindered access to the area. An untold number of bodies were believed to be buried in the rubble and debris.
The official death toll stood at 413, while 784 people were missing and 1,128 injured. In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area near the quake's epicenter. Local media reports said at least 1,300 people may have been killed.

Japan huge quake
A day after the biggest quake on record in Japan, the government said it was still too early to grasp the full extent of damage or casualties. The confirmed death toll so far is almost 300, though media reports say it is at least 1,300.
"Unfortunately, we must be prepared for the number to rise greatly," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.
The tremor, with a magnitude of 8.9, was so huge that thousands fled their homes from coastlines around the Pacific Rim, as far away as North and South America, fearful of a tsunami.
Most appeared to have been spared anything more serious than some high waves, unlike Japan's northeast coastline which was hammered by a 10-meter high tsunami that turned houses and ships into floating debris as it surged into cities and villages, sweeping aside everything in its path.
"I thought I was going to die," said Wataru Fujimura, a 38-year-old sales representative in Koriyama, Fukushima, north of Tokyo and close to area worst hit by the quake.
"Our furniture and shelves had all fallen over and there were cracks in the apartment building, so we spent the whole night in the car . Now we're back home trying to clean everything up."
The government warned of a possible radiation leak as authorities began trying to reduce pressure at damaged two nuclear plants, sending tens of thousands of residents out of the area to avoid possible contamination.
Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said it had begun steps to release pressure at its two nuclear power plants in Fukushima, some 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.
But Kyodo news agency quoted the company as saying it was having difficulties opening a valve at its Daiichi reactor to release pressure.
Experts and the government both insisted there would be no radioactive disaster.
"No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction," Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said.
"Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius."
The unfolding natural disaster, which has been followed by dozens of aftershocks, prompted offers of search and rescue help from 50 countries.
In one of the worst-hit residential areas, people buried under rubble could be heard calling out for rescue, Kyodo news agency reported. TV footage showed staff at one hospital waving banners with the words "FOOD" and "HELP" from a rooftop.
In Tokyo, tens of thousands of office workers were stranded overnight after the quake shut down public transport. Many were forced to bed down where they could, with newspapers to lie on and briefcases for pillows.
Kyodo said at least 116,000 people in Tokyo had been unable to return home on Friday evening due to transport disruption.
The northeastern Japanese city of Kesennuma, with a population of 74,000, was hit by widespread fires and one-third of the city was under water, Jiji news agency said on Saturday.
The airport in the coastal city of Sendai, home to one million people, was on fire, it added.
"Sendai (city) is now completely sunk underwater," said limousine driver Yoshikatsu Takayabe, 52. "What do I want the government to do? I can't flush the toilet, I want the water back on in my house."
TV footage from Friday showed a black torrent of water carrying cars and wrecked homes at high speed across farmland near Sendai, 300 km (180 miles) northeast of Tokyo. Ships had been flung onto a harbor wharf, where they lay helplessly.
Kyodo news agency reported that contact had been lost with four trains in the coastal area.
The disaster poses a huge challenge for Kan's government which has come under such concerted attack from the opposition and within the ruling Democratic Party (DJP) that it has struggled to implement any policy.
Just hours before the quake struck, Kan was rejecting demands that he resign, his political future looking increasingly bleak and unable even to muster enough support to ensure the passage of bills needed to enact the new budget.
But after the tremor, politicians pushed for an emergency budget to fund relief efforts, with Kan urging them to "save the country," Kyodo reported.
Japan is already the most heavily indebted major economy in the world, meaning any additional borrowing by the government would be closely scrutinized by financial markets.

"When I felt the quake yesterday, I actually thought it was a strong wind slamming the door," said Emiko Nakahara, 61.
"But then my husband said no, it's a quake. I was frightened like I've never been before."
Other nuclear power plants and oil refineries were shut down and one refinery was ablaze. Power to millions of homes and businesses was knocked out. Several airports, including Tokyo's Narita, were closed on Friday and rail services halted. All ports were shut.
Nuclear power plant operator Tepco warned of severe power shortages over the weekend.
The central bank said it would cut short a two-day policy review scheduled for next week to one day on Monday and promised to do its utmost to ensure financial market stability.
The disaster struck as the world's third-largest economy had been showing signs of reviving from an economic contraction in the final quarter of last year. It raised the prospect of major disruptions for many key businesses and a massive repair bill running into tens of billions of dollars.
The earthquake was the fifth most powerful to hit the world in the past century. It surpassed the Great Kanto quake of September 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area.
The 1995 Kobe quake caused $100 billion in damage and was the most expensive natural disaster in history.
